SpaceX Starship Explodes During Test in Texas, No Injuries Reported

A SpaceX Starship rocket, designated Ship 36, erupted in a massive fireball during a routine static fire test at the company’s Starbase facility in South Texas on June 18, 2025, marking another setback for Elon Musk’s ambitious lunar and Martian exploration program. The explosion, which occurred around 11 p.m. local time, destroyed the rocket’s upper stage as it was being prepped for its 10th test flight.

SpaceX described the incident as a “major anomaly,” with preliminary data suggesting a nitrogen composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV) in the payload bay failed below its proof pressure. No injuries were reported, and the area was evacuated prior to the test, ensuring all personnel were safe. Firefighters from the Brownsville Fire Department responded to extinguish fires sparked by the blast.

The incident follows a series of challenges for the Starship program, including explosive failures in January, March, and May 2025. Despite the setback, SpaceX is investigating the cause alongside local authorities, with Musk downplaying the event as “just a scratch” on X. The company aims to launch its next Starship test flight in August, continuing its push for a fully reusable rocket system critical to NASA’s Artemis missions and Musk’s Mars colonization vision.
